title: Console and terminal
description: Open the AWS console or a terminal with a session ready.
---

## Console

The row action **Open console** builds a federated sign-in URL from the active session's credentials and opens it in your browser. The console session lasts as long as the credentials do.

```sh
rolle console "Acme Prod/AdministratorAccess"
rolle console "Acme Prod/AdministratorAccess" --print   # print the URL instead
```

## Terminal

**Open terminal** launches a new terminal window with the session's environment exported. rolle picks the terminal from **Settings → General → Terminal**, or detects one. On macOS it uses the app named in `$TERM_PROGRAM`, then the first installed of cmux, Ghostty, iTerm, and Warp, then Terminal. On Linux it uses `$TERMINAL`, then the first of x-terminal-emulator, gnome-terminal, konsole, xfce4-terminal, alacritty, kitty, and xterm. On Windows it uses Windows Terminal, then PowerShell.

```sh
rolle shell "Acme Prod/AdministratorAccess"
```

## Shell exports

`rolle env` prints the credentials as exports for the current shell.

```sh
eval "$(rolle env "Acme Prod/AdministratorAccess")"
rolle env personal --powershell | Invoke-Expression
```
